Position Description

University LibrarianTowson University seeks nominations and applications for the position of University Librarian. Reporting to the Provost, the University Librarian will join a vibrant academic administrative team that is actively situating the University for prominence as Maryland's metropolitan university. With a current enrollment of over 18,000 students and academic programs through the doctoral level, the University is the second largest public institution in the state of Maryland and expects to grow to at least 25,000 students by 2014. The Albert S. Cook Library currently has a full-time equivalent staff of 52.5 including 17.5 librarians with rank and permanent status.The University seeks candidates who can lead and clearly articulate the library's role as it recasts its service and access responsibilities during this time of fast growth and mission transformation. In particular, the focus for the successful candidate will be to implement, in concert with the entire library staff, the resource base for the library that corresponds to the growth of the University; the library's responsibilities to further the metropolitan university mission; a comprehensive staff, service, access and facilities plan; the library's role in the University's information technology organization; and how to actively serve as the advocate for new approaches to scholarly communication.To qualify for this position, the candidate must have a MLS from an ALA-accredited program; a minimum of 10 years post-MLS experience in a medium to large library with a progressive professional track to a department head or higher; and a significant record of academic scholarship and/or professional accomplishments at the national level.Application materials should include a letter that includes background and experience and how they fit with the requirements of this position; current curriculum vitae; and the names, title, e-mail and business addresses and business telephone numbers of at least five professional references.

Description: Directs a staff of eleven; manages the delivery of reference and instruction; and oversees the selection of electronic and print resources. Responsibilities include providing leadership in planning; implementing and evaluating services; goal setting; and establishing policies and procedures for the team. You will also liaison with internal and external constituents; serve as a member of the Electronic Services, Reserves and Web team; and represent UMUC to external organizations concerned with reference, instruction, and collection development. Requires a minimum of five years related experience to include administrative, strategic planning, and supervisory responsibilities; a strong desire and ability to lead a team and perform administrative functions.



Job Title: Head of Reference and Information Literacy (I001336)

Description: This newly created position oversees librarians providing reference and instruction services online and face-to-face; coordinates library efforts to integrate information literacy into the curriculum; and supports the Assistant Director in overseeing projects and creating reports. Requires three-five years related experience, at least one in a managerial position.
